If AI Writes Code 3x Faster, Why Aren't We Shipping 3x Faster?

You can get an 80% done version of a thing faster than you could even have a meeting about which things to prioritize. That's the huge fundamental change.

The core observation here is correct, and it generalizes well beyond software. AI made one part of the work dramatically cheaper, but that part was surrounded by planning, coordination, review, and waiting - none of which got faster. The bottleneck moved, and most organizations have not noticed yet.

This is the pattern playing out across every profession right now. AI can draft a marketing brief in seconds, but the three rounds of stakeholder feedback still take a fortnight. AI can summarize a contract in minutes, but the commercial negotiation it informs has not changed at all. Speed in one link of the chain does not shorten the chain.

Where the piece goes wrong is in treating all that surrounding process as waste. Some of it is - the pre-meetings about pre-prioritization, the queuing, the committee design reviews. But some of it exists because mistakes are expensive, not because code is expensive. Those are different problems, and dismantling the safeguards for one because you have solved the other is how you ship fast in the wrong direction.

The article also lands, inevitably, on a pitch for Builder.io. Which is fine - it is their blog. But it is worth noticing how the argument is subtly shaped by what they sell. The conclusion is not "rethink your processes" so much as "rethink your processes in a way that happens to require our product." The insight is real. The prescription is an advertisement.

The useful takeaway, stripped of the sales angle: stop measuring AI's value in speed of output. Measure it in how quickly you can get something real in front of someone who will tell you whether it is any good. That reframing - from cost per line to cost per honest reaction - is the durable idea here.
